La quête spirituelle hier et aujourd'hui
Jacques Arènes - Collection Sciences humaines et religions
Résumé
--
This book is the fruit of Jacques Arènes' research over several years on the psychic conditions of the religious phenomenon in today's world. The approach he adopts refutes the functionalist one?studied in the Christian context?and creates a mutual tension between secular ideas, 'scientific' notions concerning interiority and the more ancient ones emanating from Christianity. The author defends the hypothesis that the 'secularization' of psychism, induced by new theories of interiority, has led to a totally new psychic action both individual and collective. The author's basic intuition is that religion today is strongly related to the process of subjectivation: in the historical context, where institutions that produce meaning have become uncertain, people 'use' religion today as a place of personal construction. The book discusses the highly individual configurations of spirituality today, and analyses the way in which the quest for meaning exists alongside more classic religious approaches. Contemporary spirituality borrows psychotherapeutic methods and approaches to integrate them in a problematic of faith. The confrontation of the paradigms used by religious theories of interiority and the sciences of psychism leads to a profound discussion about the interactions of the psychic and the spiritual. This tension between the different ideas about interiority affects a new anthropological reality where the guilty subject of Freudian times, haunted by their fault, is slowly giving way to the wounded subject, suffering under the weight of destiny. Broader than an approach coming from the religious sphere, this study gives us elements to understand today's man in search of meaning and in quest of the self. Another book by the same author, soon to be published by Éditions du Cerf (Croire au temps du dieu fragile. Psychanalyse du deuil de Dieu ), explores in greater detail the position believers who are facing the 'trauma' of a common culture calling into question the roots of their faith.
