Between 1549 and 1551 Calvin delivered his sermons on Acts 1 - 7. The 44 surviving sermons have been published in the series Supplementa Calviniana. A part of the lectio continua on Acts is analysed in this study ; an attempt is made to provide an answer to the question of how Calvin applied the text of his sermon to the daily world of his audience. This research rectifies our view of Calvin as a rigid and dogmatic theologian. The sermons bear witness to his pastoral care for a congregation which is continuously threatened by persecution because of its faith. Calvin did not just address his congregation regarding the relation to God ; he also comprehensively discussed the various social relations in which they participated. He did not avoid subjects such as politics, social compassion, labour and so forth. Through the themes of hearing, application, examination and recruitment, Calvin's homiletic view of the audience is observed. In the evaluation in the final chapter, the sermons are placed within the context of sixteenth-century preaching.
