Conquering the Command Line

Résumé

For more than 30 years, computing professionals have used shells to interact with operating systems. That's still true today: even though mouse and windows-driven interfaces have matured considerably, users like you still choose a shell to do much of their work. Why? A shell is a uniquely powerful interface with endless features and advantages. Modern windowing systems can't match them. We'll show you why, and how, to master shells.

This book is divided into three parts consisting of 15 chapters. If you aren't already a proficient shell user, Part 1 presents a user-friendly overview of the shell's underpinnings, features, and most common commands. We'd venture that experienced users will also learn a trick or two in these opening chapters. In Parts 2 and 3 we settle in on the crux of this book, offering complete coverage of the popular bash and zsh shells. Ever mindful of helping you work faster and more efficiently, Part 2 keys upon a vast array of practical features, including startup file management, history manipulation, command-line editing, and pattern matching. Part 3 brings together everything you've learned thus far to build useful programs, and especially, to enhance the shell's line editor and completion system.

We wrote this book to help you make the most of your time working with the shell. Whether you're new or an experienced user of this powerful interface paradigm, we'll provide you with the keen insight that will help you conquer the command line.
