Evolutionary Computation in Bioinformatics

David W Corne, Gary B. Fogel

394 pages, parution le 12/03/2003

Résumé

This book offers a definitive resource that bridges two communities. Gary Fogel and David Corne, well-known representatives of these fields, have written an introduction to biology and bioinformatics for computer scientists and an introduction to evolutionary computation for biologists and for computer scientists unfamiliar with these techniques. The remaining eighteen chapters, written by leading computer scientists and biologists examine successful applications of evolutionary computation in areas such as: DNA sequencing, protein folding, DNA annotation, gene and protein classification, drug targeting, drug design, data mining of biological databases, and biodata visualisation. The appendix provides a full listing of biological data resources.

Describes applications of EC to bioinformatics in a wide variety of areas including DNA sequencing, protein folding, gene and protein classification, drug targeting, drug design, data mining of biological databases, and biodata visualization.
Offers industrial and academic researchers in computer science, biology, and bioinformatics an important resource for applying evolutionary computation.
Includes a detailed appendix of biological data resources.

L'auteur - David W Corne

David W. Corne lectures and consults in EC at the University of Reading. His early research on evolutionary timetabling (with Peter Ross) resulted in the first, freely available and successful EC-based general timetabling program for educational and other institutions. Later EC work has been in protein folding, human genome research, medicine, scheduling, layout design, telecommunications, data mining, algorithm comparison issues, multiobjective optimization, and others. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, a founding co-editor of the Journal of Scheduling, on the Review Board of Applied Intelligence and appears on a host of international conference program committees.
