Résumé

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of the Victorian era, popular in Britain and the United States during her lifetime. Her first collection of poems, An Essay on Mind, with Other Poems, was published in 1826 and reflected her passion for Byron and Greek politics. Its publication drew the attention of a blind scholar of the Greek language, Hugh Stuart Boyd, and of another Greek scholar, Uvedale Price, with whom she maintained sustained correspondence. Among other neighbours was Mrs James Martin from Colwall, with whom she also corresponded throughout her life. Later, at Boyd's suggestion, she translated Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound (published in 1833; retranslated in 1850). During their friendship Barrett studied Greek literature, including Homer, Pindar and Aristophanes.CONTENTS:The Poetry CollectionsTHE BATTLE OF MARATHONA ESSAY ON MIND, WITH OTHER POEMSPROMETHEUS BOUNDPOEMS, 1838-50SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESESONNETSCASA GUIDI WINDOWSAURORA LEIGHPOEMS BEFORE CONGRESSLAST POEMSThe Non-FictionSOME ACCOUNT OF THE GREEK CHRISTIAN POETSTHE BOOK OF THE POETSREVIEW OF 'POEMS, CHIEFLY OF EARLY AND LATE YEARS, INCLUDING THE BORDERERS, A TRAGEDY BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH'REVIEWS OF CORNELIUS MATHEWS' POETRYREVIEW OF 'ORION: AN EPIC POEM by R.
