His mother, Masha, was a Russian Jew who had immigrated to Canada with her family in 1927.#2 The family was well-off, although not as wealthy as some other families in Westmount. They had a nanny, a chauffeur, and a gardener who doubled as the family's driver.#3 The Cohen family was extremely well-known and respected. Leonard's great-grandfather Lazarus Cohen had been the first of the family to come to Canada, and he had helped build a synagogue and several Jewish philanthropic societies.#4 Lyon Cohen, like his father, was a very successful businessman. He had been secretary of the Anglo-Jewish Association at age sixteen, and had founded a Jewish community center and a sanatorium. He was a staunch Canadian patriot.
