However, they built castles as symbols of their increasing power.#4 The Habsburgs were a family that originally came from Habsburg, Austria. They began to accumulate properties elsewhere, and the name of Habsburg slid down the list. It was only revived in the eighteenth century, when it was fashionable to recall ancestral origins.
