The Civil War had erupted just three years after Roosevelt's birth in a New York City brownstone, and that conflict had exerted a strong influence on a young boy.#3 Roosevelt had always had something worth doing close to his mind. But it would take nine more years before he got another opportunity to do anything about it. In 1895, he wrote a letter to New York governor Levi P. Morton asking for a position in the Cuban force.#4 Roosevelt was a very competitive person, and he and Wood quickly became friends. They would often test the limits of their bodies, and Roosevelt's asthma disappeared completely.
