This was the year that Putin took aim at the EU and its eastward spread, by claiming to protect the traditional values of Orthodox Slavic society against a decadent secular West.#4 In response to the West's normalization of homosexuality, Russia passed its federal law for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating for a Denial of Traditional Family Values. This unleashed a wave of violent aggression against queer people in Ukraine, and there was a push to not talk about LGBT rights in Ukraine for fear of playing into the hands of the opposition.
