My parents, Hans and Margarethe Jaretzki, had married in 1917 after my father, a German soldier, was invalided back from the Russian Front during the First World War. My paternal grandfather, Samuel Jaretzki, was a tough, disciplined man.#2 My parents, Hans and Anna, were married in 1917. They had my brother, Claude, in 1920, and I was born five years later. My parents were happy, but the anti-Semitism they experienced made them realize that they could not stay in Germany. They left in 1934.#3 I was nine years old when I heard the voices of the Hitler Youth singing the Nazi anthem to the drumbeat of their jackboots. I was out in the street with my friend Lottie, watching and waving happily as thousands of Hitler Youth marched past.#4 My father was a Bauhaus architect and a leading light of the modernist Bauhaus design movement. In 1933, the Nazis threw him out of the Association of German Architects. He and my mother were able to move to England in 1934, where they lived in North London.
