It began on the 25th of September 1513, when the Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa climbed over the Isthmus of Panama and saw what he called the Mar del Sur.#3 Magellan's expedition was able to miss everything between the coast of Chile and the Philippines, but when you truly realize how little land there is in the Pacific, it's almost more surprising that anyone ever found anything at all.#4 The Pacific was so large and difficult to navigate that it took Europeans nearly three hundred years to complete it. The accounts of these early explorers are a unique source of information, as they can tell us things that are difficult to discover any other way.
