Segregation is based on these assumptions, and has its roots in the slavery period.#2 The treatment of the free Negroes was similar to that of the slaves, except that they were not slaves. They were denied full rights as citizens, and were restricted in their freedom of assembly and movement.#3 Urban life was a small aspect of the culture of the Old South, and urban slavery was a even smaller aspect of the Peculiar Institution. In a history of segregation, however, the urban experience requires special attention.#4 The urban experience in the South was typically different from the Old South, and it was a mistake to place too much emphasis on the urban experience as evidence of segregation or the opposite tendency.
