The French Prime Minister, Paul Reynaud, believed that if he could persuade the British to enter negotiations, the humiliation would be shared and palliated.#4 Churchill was determined not to get into the same position as Chamberlain had done by negotiating with Hitler. He understood that if Britain accepted Italian mediation, the sinews of resistance would relax and the will to fight would be gone.
