I explained to the head of the hiring committee that I wanted to be a doctor because I had a voracious intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic persistence.#2 I told them about my years in Paris, teaching in a high school so I could study medicine at the Sorbonne, and how my fascination with the human brain led me to a master's degree in neurotoxicology. I explained how incurable optimism kept me afloat as a Schweitzer fellow in Gabon, West Africa.#3 I told the doctors at the meeting that I wanted to bring rural family medicine to Cane Creek, and that I was ready to take the risk. They seemed relieved that we had addressed the elephant in the room and could move on.#4 I met Deirdre in the early 2000s at the Governor's School, a summer camp for gifted high school students in North Carolina. We fell in love, and I convinced her to move in with me one summer at North Carolina's most notorious mental institution.
