'Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.' (Mark 8, 34). Set in the narrative of the Passion, this exhortation is one of Jesus' principal teachings for whoever wishes to be his disciple. In another striking phrase, the Gospel According to Saint Mark sums up the meaning of Christ on the Cross: 'For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mark 10, 45). Following the thread of Mark's Gospel, a veritable laying down, in narrative form, of a 'theology of the Cross', we discover that to 'take up one's cross' is a metaphorical expression to describe the disciple's path. It is not a question of seeking our cross - which in any case traverses every human life -, but of giving meaning to our hardships by living them in the manner of Christ, who went before and opened the way. An invitation to believe.
