Comment reconnaître une Annonciation ? Quels cadeaux apportent les mages à l'Enfant Jésus ? Pourquoi les premiers chrétiens ont-ils représenté le Christ sous la figure d'un berger ? Jusqu'au XIXe siècle, l'art occidental fut en grande partie religieux et il s'offre toujours au visiteur dans les musées, les expositions, les églises... Or le spectateur a de plus en plus de mal à comprendre ce qui lui est donné à voir. Une panne de transmission culturelle fait que, aujourd'hui, on ne sait plus trop décrypter les symboles du christianisme. En raccordant l'image aux Écritures et autres textes qui l'ont inspirée, en fournissant les explications de tous ordres qui permettent d'accéder à une certaine profondeur de sens et de temps, les auteurs proposent ici un guide d'accès aux oeuvres de l'art religieux chrétien. Mais il fallait surmonter une difficulté majeure : comment initier tous ceux qui n'identifient pas immédiatement une femme et un ange face à face comme une « Annonciation » ou un homme à genoux dans un jardin comme « L'agonie à Gethsémani » ? Pour relever ce défi culturel, un « guide d'identification des scènes » a été élaboré qui permet, en partant d'éléments facilement reconnaissables - personnage, animal, objet - de mettre un nom sur l'épisode mis en images. Les scènes les plus fréquentes en art ont été sélectionnées, un tableau représentatif ouvre chacun des dix-sept chapitres et, en marge, les illustrations de Brunor apportent détente et complément d'information. Et il n'hésitera plus à entrer dans les musées qui tous témoignent du profond impact de la culture religieuse sur l'Occident et de l'étonnante diversité de ses productions. À l'heure où plus que jamais il importe d'avoir la curiosité de l'autre, il est plus qu'opportun de nous réapproprier notre propre culture.

How can we recognise an Annunciation? What are the gifts that the Wise Men bring to the baby Jesus? Why did the first Christians represent Christ as a shepherd? Until the 19th century, Western art was largely religious and today we can see it in our galeries, in expositions, museums and Churches... But the viewer finds it more and more difficult to understand what is presented for his perusal. A breakdown in cultural transmission means that today, we don't know how to interpret the symbols of Christianity. By linking the image with the Scriptures and other inspirational texts, by providing explanations of all kinds that allow us to access a depth of meaning and time, the authors bring us a guide to the religious art of Christendom. But first, they had to overcome one major difficulty: to initiate all those who do not immediately identify a woman and an angel, sitting face to face, as an "Annunciation" or a man kneeling in a garden as Christ's agony in Gethsemane. To meet this challenge, they have created a "guide to the identification of scenes" that permits readers to start out from easily recognised elements - people, animals, objects - to put a name to an episode represented in images. Those scenes most frequently represented in art have been selected a characteristic picture opens each of the seventeen chapters and, in the margins, Brunor's illustrations are a source of information and recreation. No previous knowledge is required. Readers may visit image banks on the Internet (the addresses are provided) where they will find the works referred to in the book. And they will no longer hesitate to walk into museums and enjoy the paintings that bear witness to the deep impact of religious culture in the Western world and the amazing diversity of its productions.
