Martin Bodmer (1899-1971), avait un projet fou : réunir les témoignages écrits les plus significatifs de l'histoire politique, religieuse et artistique de l'humanité pour donner à voir, par-delà les siècles et les cultures, « le chemin de l'homme vers lui-même ». Parmi les 160 000 pièces patiemment réunies par Martin Bodmer, les auteurs du livre ont sélectionné 81 objets inestimables pour évoquer vingt-cinq siècles d'histoire spirituelle et religieuse. Du « Livre des morts des anciens Égyptiens » à la Controverse de Valladolid (1552), du plus ancien Évangile entier connu (IIe siècle) au Coran de Soliman le Magnifique (XVIe siècle), 72 spécialistes comptant parmi les plus reconnus du monde francophone livrent leurs visions d'un texte ou d'un phénomène spirituel majeur, des origines à la Renaissance, regroupées en 4 parties : antiquité, judaïsme, christianisme, islam. Chaque texte est précédé d'une photographie de l'objet (papyrus, manuscrit ou imprimé) et d'une photographie d'un lieu significatif. Des rives de l'Euphrate à celles du Guadalquivir, une perspective inédite s'ouvre sur notre histoire commune. Par-delà les conflits passés et présents, « Orient-Occident » se veut une réflexion constructive sur nos racines communes visant à une meilleure compréhension de ce qui nous unit et nous sépare. Ménageant de vastes espaces de réflexion aux chercheurs et aux dignitaires religieux, l'ouvrage se veut une contribution importante au dialogue des cultures que Martin Bodmer appelait de ses voeux, et une mise en valeur inédite d'un patrimoine unique au monde. Les 109 textes envisagent les phénomènes en jeu dans un langage accessible à un large public, mais les considèrent dans toute leur richesse et leur complexité. Les 221 photographies, toutes inédites, prises pour la plupart à la chambre grand format, donnent vie à un projet singulier : les pierres, les livres et les hommes entrent en résonance dans un dialogue vivant entre le présent et l'histoire.
