Résumé
Science plays an important role in art conservation and restoration. Many historic paintings, like Vincent van Gogh's Garden in Autumn shown on the front cover, have been analyzed, cleaned, retouched, or restored.
Art conservators apply an extensive knowledge of chemistry and physics to their work. The processes used in art restoration require an understanding of the materials that were originally used and the modern equivalents of those materials.
The pigments and binders used to create art can be analyzed by mass spectroscopy and gas chromatography. Trace metals can be identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence.
Signs of damage can be detected by scanning electron microscopy. Infrared reflectography can discover hidden images and original signatures behind the top layer of the painting, thereby revealing secrets and establishing authenticity.
