Résumé

Today's interest for the masterpieces of Ancient Greece is, of course, nothing new. Although the major works of reflection and literature, which undoubtedly constitute one of the foundations of Western civilisation, have been constantly read and studied, can we say as much about the architectural and artistic masterpieces? Lorenz Baumer conducts an archaeological investigation into what became of monumental edifices of Classical Greece at the end of Antiquity. He particularly explores the fate of pagan temples at a time when Christianity had conquered the Mediterranean Basin, and the redeployment, in the last centuries of Antiquity, of works dating from the Classical period. That redeployment reveals an attitude radically different from our own in relation to the art of the past, since it considers artworks as living creations still capable of expression. Through his interrogations, the question of the religious pertinence of these works (pagan), in a world which was becoming more and more Christian, is insistently posed.
