Résumé

For the last few years, Mary Magdalene - Mary of Magdala, disciple of Jesus, a sinner redeemed through her love, first witness of the Resurrection - has been the centre of attention. American feminist groups as well as lovers of secrets and mysteries have concentrated all their aspirations on this character. A recent novel placed her in the role of Christ's wife and mother of his children, with a long line of heirs that has survived to our times... The phenomenon is not a new one. Each era has constructed its own Magdalene, from 19th century painters to Vézelay. Our society has, in its turn, adopted this likeable biblical protagonist. But in the face we have attributed to Mary-Magdalene, what image of ourselves and our society can we perceive? There are many books on the woman from Magdala: exegetical, historical, literary and hagiographical, but none before has assembled all the elements to produce a history of how this character has been received. In this new book, the author has done exactly that starting out afresh from the gospels and travelling through the centuries right up to the most recent Internet sites.
