Les saints en islam, les messagers de l'espérance
Nelly Amri - Collection Patrimoines - islam
Résumé
--
Eschatology has cast new light on the influence of the cult of the saints, the figure of the visionary saint, inspired and intercessorial, throughout Maghreb at the end of the Middle Ages, and the development of devotional practices of the Prophet. Examining varied and, until now, rarely exploited documentation (hagiographical collections, theological treaties, orisons and prayers, biographical dictionaries, the literature of visions, legal consultations and responsa), the author has conducted an authentic historical investigation of people's beliefs in those times, and their fears about death and the End of time, especially the opulence and the forms of their constructions for the future at an epoch marked by fear, due to the massive propagation of the plague. Fear and hope disputed man's affect. Of course, for believers, the shafâ'a (intercession) of the Prophet remained a certitude but from then on, a chain of intercessors would plead for the cause of whoever entered into the affection of a saint. 'Foreign', spiritual masters, 'ravis' in God and visionaries, the saints of the Maghreb, with their sometimes abrupt mode of saintliness, were courted and feared by the most powerful. But they also give us matter for reflection here and now. Heirs of the prophets, they perpetuate the history of salvation and remain the guarantors of divine presence in the world. Vectors of hope here on earth, they are also messengers of hope in the next world. Nelly Amri is a historian who teaches at the Faculty of Arts, Letters and the Humanities, University of Manouba (Tunis). Her interest in Sufism, the history of the saints and the hagiography of Islam, in Ifriqiya and Medieval Maghreb in particular, has produced many books.
