Résumé
--
The Greek Apologists of the second century - Aristides, St. Justin, Tatian, Athenagoras, Theophilus, as well as some little known or anonymous figures - were Christianity's first intellectuals. At a time when it was not unusual for hostile crowds to lead what were in fact 'pogroms' against Christians, acts that were more or less tolerated by the authorities, (the Antonines, from Trajan to Marcus Aurelius, did not approve of Christians) these men continued to take up their pens. Some of them wrote to the Emperor directly, others to the pagan public, in order to defend their brothers in religion from the horrific accusations made against them: ritual cannibalism, incestuous debauchery, irreverence against the city's Gods (which their enemies referred to as 'atheism') also to explain and defend their new doctrine and their way of life. By presenting Christian doctrine in a rational manner, acceptable to educated people of those times, they not only constructed the first bridge between pagan philosophy and Christianity, they also contributed to the elaboration of Christian theology. But they had other adversaries, closer to home: the Gnostics, who claimed to possess a deeper understanding of the Scriptures who saw God as being superior to the Demiurge, denied the humanity of Christ the Redeemer and rejected the Resurrection of the Body and the Jews, deeply attached to a literal interpretation of the Bible, who refused to recognise Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah announced by the Prophets, the pre-existing Word of God. In this book, the most comprehensive available in the French language since that published by A. Puech in 1912, the author presents the men (focussing on authentic information and not simply hagiographical legend), their works and their doctrines, to provide the most faithful account possible of their action and their lasting contribution to literature and theology.
