La symbolique du repas dans les communautés

Résumé
--
'Who could imagine that such a banal act as eating together might be of such great human significance? In these pages, Father Jean-Claude carries out an in-depth analysis of this practice, resuming, summarizing and developing a psycho-sociological dissertation which he defended in 1982. But, in order to understand what happens when humans eat together, he explores beyond the context of his discipline and draws on the history of art, his observation of contemporary communities, the Bible and spiritual theology. [...] Humanizing the act of eating means making it a moment of conviviality with others, even with God [...] All God's teaching to His people served to redeem them from their status of beasts of burden, to which the Egyptian oppressors had reduced them, in order to give them back their human dignity in particular by teaching them how to eat in the desert through the daily gathering of manna. In Exodus, there is an entire education in the art of eating, a complete apprenticeship in the receiving and sharing of gifts. Consequently, when men decide to live in a community and devote themselves to God, they cannot leave their eating habits to chance. The medieval architecture of the monasteries shows how the refectory is, in a way, a replica of the Church: one passes from the liturgy of the choir to that of the table, because a meal is a prolongation of the Eucharist...' [Brother Étienne Ricaud, osb, Abbot of Fleury, Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire]. This study of the symbolic aspect of meals, of behaviour and facts relating to the table, concludes with a profound reflection on the Alliance to which the meal is an invitation. It will shed light on religious communities and families, and help them to 'eat together in order to better live together'.
