"The search for peace is not the smallest challenge for all our wise and spiritual men who, from generation to generation, tirelessly invest their honour and dignity in striving for the good and happiness of mankind." This book, the fruit of a contribution to a Buddhist/Christian seminary on the theme of peace, examines the Biblical experience of betrayal and fratricide in the form of a diptych. The two negative memoirs which illustrate so uniquely perjury, inhospitality and jealousy-inspired murder, gravely compromise any hope of peace in the human consciousness. The unflagging opportunities man offers us, to save ourselves from the inevitable descent into violence, leads him to a greater inner knowledge of himself: the knowledge that peace, as with the Kingdom of Heaven, is a constituent element of his true nature. The teaching of the Beatitudes provides man with the ultimate prospect of inner freedom as opposed to a situation of confinement and impotence, wherein he cannot imagine finding peace except through responding to violence with violence, force with force, and power with power.
