Is there a link between human consciousness, the experience of faith and madness? Starting out from the idea of 'madness' or 'foolishness' in St. Paul, (I Co. 1, 18-31), the author explores the theme of the 'foolishness of God' which is in truth the revelation of his foolishness in loving man. Isn't it God who, in order to save man, loves him to the point of madness, beyond all limits? The reason underlying this theme - and its originality - serve to inspect the sacred foolishness of God. In what respect does that foolishness reveal a truth about God and man? In that perspective, the author's investigation focuses on the event that allowed the emergence of sacred foolishness, proper to Christianity and its development in the history of man. Four exceptional authors accompany, each with his own specialty, this study: the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, the historian and theologian Michel de Certeau, the philosopher and sociologist Michel Foucault and the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan.
