This third volume in the series 'L'Église dans l'histoire' retraces the advent of the Church from the end of the Sixth Ecumenical Council (681) to the battle of Manzikert (1071). Although, during this period, the 'Greek East' and 'Latin West' became distinct entities, the author analyses them in parallel, observing where they converged or conflicted and noting the developments within the Church as a whole, rather than offering a simplistic explanation of the schism that would end up dividing Christianity. Covering events that are, in some cases, specific to each part - the iconoclastic controversy in the East and the rapid expansion of the Carolingian Empire in the West - or common to both, such as the reform of the monasteries, revival and mission, the author paints a portrait of two Christian civilisations which, in spite of the things they shared, sank deeper and deeper into mutual incomprehension. Father Louth demonstrates how, despite some curious synchronisms between East and West, two paths diverged from what was once a common route, and how Byzantine Orthodoxy defined the Greek East in relation to the Latin West in theological, religious, cultural and political terms.
