The albatross is an extraordinary bird: it cannot take to the air under its own force. If there is no strong sea breeze, it remains earthbound. Its wings require a strong breeze in order to function. Spiritual life ressembles the flight of the albatross. Left to our own devices, we cannot raise ourselves up and advance. We need Christ's blessing, to which we are bound through Baptism, and the strong breeze of the Holy Spirit which inspires the Church in its liturgy and its mission. We also need to learn to use our wings and that is the challenge of the liturgy. 'Amen, amen, I say unto you: unless a person is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God' Jesus to Nicodemus (John 3, 5). In the space of a few chapters, Bernard Marliangeas invites us to discover the spiritual wealth of Church prayer: the Christian sense of timing the central place of the Eucharist the richness of the Word of God which exists in order to be spread the liturgical Feast days and seasons the witness of the Saints and the Mother of God daily prayer and 'hourly prayer'. In this way, and in an instructive fashion, he demonstrates how liturgical prayer structures and sustains spiritual life and private prayer.
