Invitation à croire

Ce livre se présente comme le second tome de « Croire. Invitation à la foi catholique pour les femmes et les hommes du XXIe siècle », paru en 1999 (Éd. Droguet et Ardant), proposition fraternelle et témoignage rendu à la foi en direction de tous ceux, catholiques, chrétiens, croyants ou incroyants, qui s'intéressent à son sens autant qu'à son contenu. Après une analyse de l'expérience humaine et de l'acte de croire, l'ouvrage abordait les grandes affirmations du Symbole des apôtres. Le manque de place avait conduit à réduire le traitement des sacrements à une vingtaine de pages, ce qui était manifestement insuffisant. Ce second tome entend combler cette lacune en présentant l'économie sacramentelle dans l'Église. La méthode comme les destinataires visés restent les mêmes, dans un monde où la pratique sacramentelle connaît non seulement une forte baisse, mais aussi une réelle contestation. Le livre prend son point de départ dans la signification anthropologique du rite. Il fonde ensuite les sacrements dans la personne du Christ, premier sacrement de Dieu, et montre comment les sacrements font l'Église. Il décline alors le septénaire classique : baptême, confirmation, eucharistie, réconciliation (ou pénitence), onction des malades, ordre (ministères) et enfin mariage. Chaque sacrement est présenté en fonction de son originalité propre et dans la sphère de l'expérience humaine concernée (l'eau et la vie, la nourriture et le repas, la démarche humaine de réconciliation, la maladie et la mort, l'autorité, et enfin le mariage comme institution), compte tenu des difficultés actuelles qui s'attachent à sa pratique. Le contenu doctrinal du sacrement est exprimé à la lumière de l'histoire, car les sacrements appartiennent à la fois à la parole et à la pratique de l'Église, et complété par des réflexions d'ordre pastoral. Le but de l'ouvrage est de proposer des sacrements « séduisants », à la fois crédibles et désirables.

This book is the second volume of 'Croire. An invitation to the Catholic faith for 21st century men and women', published in 1999 (Éd. Droguet et Ardant), a fraternal offering and testimony to Faith intended for all readers, be they Catholic, Christian, believers or non-believers, who take as much interest in its meaning as its content. After an analysis of the human experience and the act of believing, the major assertions of the Apostles' Creed are treated. A shortage of space had resulted in the treatment of the Sacraments being confined to twenty-odd pages, which was clearly insufficient. This second volume repairs that shortcoming by presenting the sacramental organisation in the Church. The method, and the intended audience, remains the same in a world where sacramental observance is not only undergoing a steep decline, but is also being called into question. The book's point of departure is the anthropological significance of the rite. It then merges the sacraments into the person of Christ, the first sacrament of God, and shows how the sacraments make up the Church. After that, it lists the classic seven sacraments: baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, reconciliation (or penance), the anointing of the sick, holy orders and lastly marriage. Each sacrament is presented according to its own specificity and the sphere of human experience it concerns (water and life, nourishment and the meal, the human approach to reconciliation, sickness and death, authority, and lastly marriage as an institution), taking into account the difficulties involved in its practice today. The doctrinal content of the sacrament is expressed in the light of history, for the sacraments belong both to the word and to the practice of the Church. Reflections of a pastoral nature round off the book. The author's aim is to set out sacraments that are 'appealing', both credible and desirable.
