Résumé
--
'This book is both a manual and a practical exercise book', writes Louis Bouyer in the preface to his 'Introduction à la vie spirituelle'. This manual has all the pedagogical qualities one might expect, but it also possesses momentum and a vision. To all those men and women who 'wish to deepen their spiritual life by drawing on the great sources of the Holy Scriptures, enlightened by Catholic tradition', this Introduction states its intention, without exaggeration: to provide an initiation to the fundamental problems posed by all spiritual life and the permanent elements of their solution. The author has avoided the danger of producing a biased or narrow work, persuaded that there is only one Catholic spirituality worthy of the name: that of the Gospel, as proclaimed by the Church, as it comes from Christ through his apostles,"the same yesterday, today and tomorrow'. The great French theologian has treated his major concerns and convictions in this book. Readers will also observe his immense erudition - especially in the history of religions - that of a man rooted in his tradition yet curious about everything that has a bearing on spiritual life, even in very different worlds such as Buddhism, for example. With 'Le Sens de la vie monastique' and 'Le Sens de la vie sacerdotale', this book forms a trilogy on the three 'stages of life' (baptism, consecration and sacerdocy). Written during the preparatory years of the Vatican II council, it brings the reader the fruits of the research which Louis Bouyer conducted with some other fervent enthusiasts of theological and spiritual tradition, in their search for an authentic revival of Church life. It retains all their freshness and pertinence."
