Résumé
--
The title of this volume may surprise, as the Middle Ages is generally regarded as the apogee of the Church. The author of this synthesis of twelve centuries of history - from Constantine's conversion to the Reformation - aims to demonstrate how firmly the Catholic Church is rooted in the West, whether in its agreement to collaborate first with the Roman emperors, then the Barbarian kings, the Carolingians and their successors (4th - 11th c), or in its desire to maintain a control over society by combating its adversaries and extending its influence in the East, even the Far East (12th - 13th c). The author also describes the efforts of those religious and lay men and women, generally regarded as saints, to seek reform - though not always successfully. So we read of triumphs and glory, of which some testimonies still remain, but also of shortcomings and failures. The dream of a "Christian Civilisation" never came to fruition.
