Résumé
--
The prophetic corpus of the Old Testament is usually divided into the great (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel...) and minor prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos...). But there is one prophet who, according to Jewish and Christian tradition, outshines all others: Elijah, the 'Tishbite'. In the Transfiguration, Moses represents the Law and Elijah the prophets. However, contrary to other prophets who have left us a book, we only have a few chapters about Elijah. Moreover, they tell us more about what the prophet did then what he said. Walter Vogels, by tackling the literary, historical and ethical issues raised by these texts, introduces us to a man who is full of contrasts: between prayer and action, freedom and obedience, violence and gentleness, altruism and intolerance, Elijah's life, marked by several miracles, remains shrouded in mystery. This learned work reveals Elijah to be a great defender of social justice and a denouncer of idolatry.
