Économie et humanisme dans le mouvement de la modernité
Hugues Puel - Collection L'histoire à vif
Résumé
--
Founded by the Dominican, Joseph Lebret, to promote a type of economy beneficial to mankind and capable of constant adaptation to the social context, the famous association 'Économie et Humanisme' has maintained a level of vitality that astonishes many observers in society and the world of finance. Hugues Puel, who joined the Dominicans in 1957, became involved in the movement during Lebret's lifetime. Here, he speaks as a participant in this adventure, not as a historian, recounting the cultural and religious origins, the birth and development of a movement that is linked to the evolution of the Catholic Church in France and particularly to the commitments of the French Dominicans. He shows how the movement has found its place, culturally and spiritually, throughout the contradictory evolutions of the modern world. More dynamic than ever, today's movement is focussing its research on the following issues: poverty, housing, town planning, local politics, solidarity between nations. It is examining, in the context of globalization, the ways and means of a development that will be both human and long-lasting. Faithful to their tradition, marked by the periodic publication of manifestos ('Face au chaos', In the Face of Chaos, 1942 'L'Ambition planétaire d'une civilisation solidaire', The Planetary Ambition of a Caring Civilisation,1959 'Pour un nouvel ordre mondial', For a New World Order, 1976), it is now at work on the elaboration of a new manifesto : 'Redefining Development'. Lively and informative - with an attractive lay-out -, this work takes the reader on a fascinating tour of the great social and economic issues that have arisen in the course of the past sixty years, and which we still have to face today.
