Se tenir « Devant Dieu pour tous ». C'est ainsi qu'Edith Stein (Breslau, 1891 - Auschwitz / Birkenau II, 1942) a compris sa vocation. Sa vocation dans l'Église et pour le monde. Elle est née de famille juive, en Silésie. Adolescente, elle devient « libre penseur » elle abandonne la foi de ses Pères. Elle découvre la philosophie, en 1913, à l'école d'Edmund Husserl, fondateur de la phénoménologie. Après la lecture de Thérèse d'Avila, elle reçoit, en 1922, le baptême dans l'Église catholique. Enseignante à l'Université et conférencière, elle défend la condition de la femme et en promeut le statut. Et elle développe une pédagogie qui épanouisse la personne dans toutes ses dimensions. Elle entre au Carmel, en 1933, quand Hitler et les nazis prennent le pouvoir, réalisant ainsi un désir qu'elle portait depuis son baptême. Elle vit au carmel de Cologne puis se réfugie au carmel d'Echt aux Pays-Bas. En 1942, elle est arrêtée par la Gestapo. Elle est déportée : « Viens, dit-elle à sa soeur, nous allons pour notre Peuple. » À l'âge de 51 ans, elle est assassinée dans une chambre à gaz du camp de concentration de Auschwitz / Birkenau II. La vie d'Edith Stein fut une quête constante et humble de la vérité : la vérité envisagée comme un principe de vie. Juive et chrétienne, philosophe et religieuse, universitaire et carmélite, conférencière à travers l'Europe et cloîtrée. Et Martyre. Edith Stein, soeur Thérèse Bénédicte de la Croix, expérimente et éprouve des réalités apparemment paradoxales mais tout cela contribue à construire sa personnalité. Une fois baptisée, elle continue de penser en phénoménologue et, entrant au Carmel, elle ne cesse pas d'être juive. En sa personne, elle a accompli une unité profonde, unique et exceptionnelle. Edmund Husserl en témoigne ainsi : « En elle, tout est authentique. » C'est vers une telle authenticité de la personne qu'elle conduit ceux qui fréquentent son oeuvre considérable ou s'approchent d'elle. Soeur Thérèse Bénédicte de la Croix, Edith Stein, est copatronne de l'Europe.

She was born into a Jewish family in Silesia. In her teenage years, she became a 'free thinker', abandoning the religion of her forefathers. In 1913, at university under the teaching of Edmund Husserl - the founder of phenomenology - she discovered philosophy. After reading St. Teresa of Avila, she was baptised into the Catholic Church in 1922. A university teacher and speaker at conferences, she defended an improved status for women in society, and developed teaching that encouraged the development of every facet of the person. She entered the Carmelite order in1933, just as Hitler and the Nazis were coming to power, so fulfilling a desire she had nurtured since her baptism. She lived in the Carmelite convent in Cologne, before taking refuge in a convent in Echt, in the Netherlands. In 1942, she was arrested by the Gestapo. She was deported: 'Come', she said to her sister, 'we go for our People.' At the age of 51, she was killed in a gas chamber at the Auschwitz/Birkenau II concentration camp. Edith Stein's life was a constant and humble quest for the truth: the truth perceived as a principle of life. Jewess and Christian, philosopher and nun, academic and Carmelite, trans-European lecturer and cloistered convent-dweller - and Martyr, Edith Stein, Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, tested and experienced seemingly paradoxical realities but all of them contributed to her personality. Even after she was baptised, she continued to think as a phenomenologist and, when she went into orders, she never ceased to be Jewish. In her person, she attained a unity that was profound, unique and exceptional. Edmund Husserl paid tribute to her thus: 'In her, everything is genuine.' It is towards that authenticity of the person that she leads those who study her considerable literary output, or who simply wish to know more about her. Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Edith Stein, is a co-Patron saint of Europe.
