"Where do we come from? Where are we going?" Whenever the theory of evolution is discussed, a lively polemic is sure to arise, because sincere believers cannot accept the scientific concept of the question. Firstly, it places humanity in the universal process of life, which is, in their eyes, a threat to human grandeur. Secondly, because it seems to contradicting the idea of providence, leaving so much to chance. Lastly, because it rejects the authority of the Bible and dogma. Secular minds, on the contrary, are scandalized by the obstinacy of certain clerics (of all confessions, Islam, Judaism and Christianity) who reject scientific merit. They are also disturbed by apologetic works that denounce the reasonable and critical approach. In this book, the author explains why such oppositions are ultimately vain. He presents the various elements involved in the quarrel with a rigorous approach. Making a rational analysis of the concepts involved and placing them in a historical perspective, Jean-Michel Maldamé manages to view from a distance the inevitable debate, a heated one because the protagonists are so emotionally involved in their beliefs. Whether we discuss life, humanity's place in the world of living creatures or the ultimate question of why we exist, we are existentially posing the question of our beginning and our end. Consequently, the book is about the theory of evolution. The author shows the long filiation of fundamentalist and creationist notions, as well as those of materialists. He defines the conditions of perceptive bible reading, presents a panorama of today's research in the renewal of natural theology. He proposes an articulation of science and philosophy. But the point of this book is not simply to provide matter for reflection. Jean-Michel Maldamé brings us a renewed theology of God's action at work throughout life. To do this, he draws on Catholic theological tradition and so benefits from a certain perspective, which is essential if we are to recognize the value of science and show how its results urge us to probe further by posing the question of beginnings and finality. Jean-Michel Maldamé opens up a path whereon we may marvel at the beauty of life, so robust, yet so fragile.
