Résumé
--
'What an astonishing piece of news.' With these words, Father Henri de Lubac, whose orthodoxy had been so keenly called into question, greeted the announcement of his participation in the Second Vatican Council. His 'Carnets' (notebooks) retrace two years of preparation, four conciliar sessions, and three recesses. They allow us to listen in on the discussion of schemas, as well as meetings of the Theological Committee and sub-committees, and the elaboration and correction of texts before submission to the Council Fathers. The reader could have no better guide than this eminent theologian, who provides an introduction to the theological upheaval that was the Council, and a notion of what was at stake in what were, sometimes, very dense discussions. Indeed, Father de Lubac does not hesitate to state clearly what he thinks of the theologians around him, the new conceptions that gain favour with the Council, or the problems he considers to be most serious for Christianity. That is why his 'Carnets' provide us with a greater historical and theological understanding of the Council.
