Badaliya

En arabe, badaliya signifie « remplacement, échange avec un soldat tiré au sort ». Le mot désigne l'attitude qui consiste à se mettre à la place de l'autre, à donner sa vie pour lui. Cette offrande de soi pour ses frères en Islam, Louis Massignon (1883-1962) en fit l'idéal de toute sa vie. Alors qu'il renaît à la foi chrétienne en Orient, au cours d'un voyage d'études à Bagdad, le célèbre orientaliste devint, en 1947, l'inspirateur d'une association de prière aux dimensions internationales, la Badaliya, dont il demeura, jusqu'à sa mort, l'infatigable animateur. Les quinze lettres annuelles et les quatre-vingt-onze convocations mensuelles de la Badaliya constituent autant d'invitations à une véritable consécration qui ne soit pas évasion compassionnelle, mais sommation d'incarnation dans l'actualité la plus contemporaine. Le contexte dramatique de la décolonisation exige des engagements en faveur d'une « paix sereine entre chrétiens et musulmans », particulièrement en Orient et en Afrique du Nord. Il fallait qu'un dialogue authentique puisse enfin se construire, dans le respect de la « parole donnée ». Les membres de la Badaliya s'y consacrent dans « la prière, la charité, la sanctification personnelle en vue du témoignage ». Diaire incomparable qui permet de suivre les événements et les conflits de l'époque, mais aussi - génie de Massignon - de s'initier à une lecture mystique de l'histoire, ces précieux documents livrent quinze années d'une aventure spirituelle singulière. Encadrés par une longue introduction présentant la genèse du projet, dès 1912, et par des témoignages, ils permettent de saisir la fécondité de cet « esprit de Badaliya ». Aucun texte n'avait encore permis de pénétrer aussi profondément au coeur même de la spiritualité et des combats de Louis Massignon, qui demeure, encore aujourd'hui, un maître pour notre temps.

In Arabic, 'badaliya' means "substitution, changing places with a soldier chosen by chance". The word refers to the act of putting oneself in another's place, giving one's life for another. For Louis Massignon (1883-1962), this sacrificing of the self for a brother in Islam was the ideal of his entire life. After rediscovering his Christian faith in the Middle East during a study trip to Bagdad, the renowned orientalist inspired, in 1947, an international prayer association, the Badaliya, which he ran unremittingly until his death. Each of the fifteen annual letters and ninety-one monthly convocations of the Badaliya is an invitation to a veritable consecration. The dramatic circumstances of decolonization require a firm commitment in favour of "untroubled peace between Christians and Muslims", particularly in the East and North Africa. It is essential that a genuine dialogue should at last begin, in respect of the word of honour given. The members of The Badaliya devote themselves to "prayer, charity and personal sanctification with a view to bearing witness". These precious documents recount fifteen years of a remarkable spiritual adventure, like an incomparable diary inviting us not only follow the events and conflicts of the period, but also (and here lies the genius of Massignon) to become initiated to a mystical reading of history. With a long introduction presenting the genesis of the project, beginning in 1912, and many personal accounts, they help us to appreciate the fecundity of this "Badaliya sprit". No other text has explored the very heart of the spirituality and combats of Louis Massignon, a man who, even today, remains a master for our times.
