Bernanos litterature et theologie

Bernanos! On ne peut songer à meilleur exemple pour tenter de saisir les liens possibles entre littérature et théologie. Son oeuvre romanesque est sous-tendue par la théologie du christianisme, singulièrement par le dogme de la communion des saints où toute l'humanité est constituée en un grand Corps mystique où se joue l'histoire du Salut, et où la souffrance des uns peut contribuer à la rédemption des autres. La structure même de la narration romanesque est en correspondance avec ces schèmes théologiques. On prêtera notamment attention au traitement particulier de la chronologie où certains instants narratifs sont à l'intersection du temps et de l'éternité. Mais il n'y a pas que les oeuvres strictement littéraires : l'auteur, de surcroît, dégage ce soubassement théologique aussi bien dans des textes plus personnels, écrits par Bernanos au début de son exil pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, que dans ses positions littéraires et politiques à l'égard de certains de ses contemporains comme François Mauriac. L'essai d'Éric Benoit offre au lecteur une subtile et rigoureuse exploration de Bernanos, exemple parfait de magnifique osmose entre une conscience théologique et le geste littéraire où elle se déploie.

Bernanos! Who could think of a better example to grasp the possible links between literature and theology? His fictional work is underpinned by the theology of Christianity, particularly by the doctrine of the communion of saints wherein all humanity is bound in a great mystic body, whose stakes are the history of Salvation, where the suffering of some can contribute to the redemption of others. The very structure of fictional narration is in harmony with these theological schemes. Readers will note the specific treatment of chronology, with certain narrative events placed at the intersection of time and eternity. But not only his literary works are concerned here: the author also detects this theological basis in his more personal texts, written by Bernanos at the beginning of his exile during WW2, and in his literary and political opinions about certain of his contemporaries, such as François Mauriac. Éric Benoit's essay is a subtle and rigorous exploration of Bernanos, the perfect example of the magnificent osmosis between theological conscience and the literary act through which it unfolds.
