XML design handbook
Scott Bonneau, Tammy Kohl, Jon Duckett, Kevin Williams, Jeni Tennison
Résumé
The XML family of technologies, by its very nature, is fluid and flexible. However, with this flexibility comes the potential for misuse. Many developers end up with unmaintainable code and, ultimately, poorly performing, high-cost solutions.
The problem here is not really a lack of information (there are many books and online resources on XML out there). The problem is a lack of reliable advice on how to use these technologies correctly and effectively. This is the gap that this book fills. It is packed with best-practice tips and techniques on all aspects of XML-related design, including:
- XML integration strategies, based on dataflow patterns and data usage
- Effective document design
- Designing robust, flexible schemas for document validation
- SAX and DOM parsing APIs - when to use which
- Best practices for XSLT design
- XML storage strategies
- Presentation strategies for a range of applications
With its detailed analysis of each of these critical pieces of the XML space, this book will help any XML developer or architect in their quest to produce efficient, robust, and extensible XML applications.
In order to focus on the key design issues, this book assumes some familiarity with the base XML technologies, such as XSLT, XML Schema, DOM, and SAX.
