Résumé

You don't have to be an engineer to understand how cellular and wireless local loop (WLL) systems work. At last, here's a book written specifically for non-technical personnel who work with engineers, but aren't familiar with the engineering concepts and technical aspects of cellular radio and telecommunications systems.

Using plain, easy-to-read language, with no mathematics, this book helps you understand the "hows and whys" behind cellular network design, and enables you to...

  • Recognize the basic similarities between cellular and WLL systems, and understand their overall design functions
  • Learn how cellular radio systems successfully locate and send calls to subscribers
  • Grasp the underlying techniques used to transfer radio signals from a transmitter to a receiver
  • Identify and compare several key radio systems in use today, including fast-moving satellite personal communications systems and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
  • Look ahead to future cellular and WLL systems, based on industry trends such as convergence, the Information Society, mobile/fixed integration, and more

Real-world examples, chapter-end questions and solutions, a complete glossary of terms and acronyms, and "at-a-glance" sections of key concepts throughout the book make it ideal reading for managers, business planners, marketing professionals, and other non-technical personnel who need a basic understanding of how these systems work. It also serves as an excellent introductory guide for first-year students in communications engineering and other related fields of study.
