SQL server 2000 stored procedures handbook
Tony Bain, Robin Dewson, Chuck Hawkins, Louis Davidson
Résumé
If you want to write better stored procedures and functions, this is the book for you.
As well as being used for fundamental database administration, stored procedures are the cornerstone of any kind of database solution. Mastery of stored procedures is imperative to access and modify your data in the most effective way, as well as to keep your database secure and performing well. This book is a must on your road to that mastery.
This book was written by real-world developers, database designers, and administrators and as such, it tackles real-world problems faced by developers when working with stored procedures, showing you how to solve these problems, and avoid common pitfalls. In the process of working through this book, you will learn to write more robust stored procedures that execute faster and protect the integrity of your data and the database itself. If you are a database administrator, you will gain valuable insights about expanding on the core system stored procedures to streamline your administration.
While SQL Server administrators and designers will benefit from this book, this book is also ideal for the experienced SQL Server 2000 developer who is already familiar with the basic concepts of stored procedures, and wants a book dedicated to working with stored procedures that starts where a book like Robert Vieira's acclaimed Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming finishes.
Topics covered include:
- Debugging and optimizing stored procedures
- Typical uses and misuses of stored procedures
- Cursors, transactions, and concurrency
- System stored procedures and extended stored procedures
- Working with triggers
- User defined functions
- Database security issues with stored procedures

Robin Dewson - Robin Dewson: Robin has been hooked on programming ever since he bought his first computer in 1980, a Sinclair ZX80. His first main application of his own was a Visual FoxPro application that could be used to run a Fantasy League system. It was at this point he met up with a great help in his PC development life, Jon Silver at Step One Technologies, where in return for training, he helped Jon with some other Visual FoxPro applications. From there, realizing that the market place for Visual FoxPro was limited, he decided to learn Visual Basic and SQL Server. Starting out with SQL Server 6.5, he soon moved to SQL Server 7 and Visual Basic 5 and became involved in developing several applications for clients both in the UK and the US. From there he moved to SQL Server 2000 and Visual Basic 6. Robin currently is consulting at Lehman Brothers in London, where he has been for nearly 5 years, using Visual Basic 6 and Sybase on a trading system called Kojak. Robin is also the author of Beginning SQL Server 2000 Programming.
