Résumé

SQL is the language of databases. It's used to create and maintain database objects, place data into those objects, query the data, modify the data, and, finally, delete data that is no longer needed. Databases lie at the heart of many, if not most business applications. Chances are very good that if you're involved with software development, you're using SQL to some degree. And if you're using SQL, you should own a good reference to the language. While it's a standardized language, actual implementations of SQL are anything but standard. Vendor variation abounds, and that's where this book comes into play.

SQL in a Nutshell, Second Edition, is a practical and useful command reference for SQL2003, the latest release of the SQL language. The book presents each of the SQL2003 statements and describes their usage and syntax, not only from the point of view of the standard itself, but also as implemented by each of the five major database platforms: DB2, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server. Each statement reference includes the command syntax by vendor, a description, and informative examples that illustrate important concepts and uses.

And SQL is not just about statements. Also important are datatypes and the vast library of built-in SQL functions that is so necessary in getting real work done. This book documents those datatypes and functions, both as described in the standard and as implemented by the various vendors. This edition also includes detailed information about the newer window function syntax that is supported in DB2 and Oracle.

SQL in a Nutshell, Second Edition, is not only a convenient reference guide for experienced SQL programmers, analysts, and database administrators. It's also a great resource for consultants and others who need to be familiar with the various SQL dialects across many platforms.

L'auteur - Kevin Kline

Kline serves as the lead information architect for shared information services at Deloitte & Touche LLP. When he's not pulling out his hair over work issues, he likes to spend time with his wife and kids, garden, restore his '66 Chevy truck, and play classical guitar. After finishing SQL in a Nutshell, Kevin doesn't want to look at a computer outside of work hours for months! Kevin is the author of Transact-SQL Programming for O'Reilly & Associates. He is also the co-author of Professional SQL Server 6.5 Admin (WROX Press) and author of Oracle CDE: Reference and User's Guide (Butterworth-Heinemann).

L'auteur - Daniel Kline

In addition to being Kevin's brother, Daniel Kline is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, where he specializes in medieval literature, literary and cultural theory, and computer-assisted pedagogy. He completed his Ph.D. at Indiana University, Bloomington, and recently edited an academic collection, called Medieval Literature for Children (Routledge, 2003). In addition to numerous scholarly presentations, Dan's work has appeared in Literary and Linguistic Computing, Philological Quarterly, Chaucer Review, College Literature, and Essays in Medieval Studies. When he's not spending time with his two boys, Dan frets over his pet project, the Electronic Canterbury Tales (http://hosting.uaa.alaska.edu/afdtk/ect_main.htm). Dan can be reached at afdtk@uaa. alaska. edu.
