SGML and HTML Explained

Martin Bryan

234 pages, parution le 10/07/1997

Résumé

Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is the formal model for Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), one of the key components of the World Wide Web (WWW). While the role of SGML is well understood, many of its detailed mechanisms are less well known, particularly by the Internet community. SGML and HTML Explained seeks to bridge the gap by describing the role of all SGML constructs and explaining how they have been used to define the latest extensions to HTML. Only by understanding the detailed workings of SGML will web professionals appreciate the true potential of HTML.

Based on the highly successful SGML: An Author's Guide, Martin Bryan has used his 10 years of experience in teaching SGML to produce a fully revised, reorganized and updated second edition which meets the needs of organizations and individuals faced with the challenge of effective information management for the new electronic age.

Features include :

  • An explanation of SGML markup declaration constructs, together with examples of their use.
  • A walk-through of the latest HTML DTD
  • A detailed examination of how HTML elements are defined and used, including those used for creating interactive forms
  • A glimpse of SGML developments on the horizon, how they could impact the future of HTML, and their business implications.

    The CD-ROM includes :

  • An electronic version of the book in HTML format containing hypertext links within and between chapters. Using an HTML document browser for viewing the text, readers will be able to quickly find information about related topics without having to resort to the comprehensive index provided in the printed book. The electronic version of the files also contain active links that provide access to many of the Internet standards and other source documents referred to in the text.
  • JADE (for Windows 95 only) - a software tool that will take the HTML text and convert it into RTF for importing into word processors that do not support HTML. This tool includes a DSSSL style specification that can be customized to format the book to any style supported by your word processor.

The CD-ROM text will be updated regularly via the WWW, where an accompanying site has been created at http:/www.sgml.u-net.com to provide you with the latest information on developments in SGML, HTML and related standards.
