Quality of service in IP Networks

Résumé

With increased Internet traffic, data, audio, and video applications have become more vulnerable to costly delivery delays and packet losses. Quality of service (QoS) is a standards effort to provide consistent levels of service despite these delivery problems. Quality of Service in IP Networks provides network engineers and architects with an understanding of the key technologies and techniques that will enable Internet QoS. This authoritative reference examines:
  • The impact of the Internet's current Best-Effort architecture on real-time multimedia applications
  • Limitations of IP networks, including latency, jitter, unpredictable packet loss, network failures, and inability to guarantee bandwidth
  • Effects of traffic classification, scheduling algorithms, link technologies, routing protocols, and signaling methods on QoS
  • The IETF's end-to-end IntServ and edge-toedge DiffServ architectural models
Quality of Service in IP Networks provides readers with the information they need to evaluate existing IP networks and determine how to improve upon traditional Best-Effort service. This book will help you:
  • Weigh the pros and cons of different service models and schemes for classification, queue management, and scheduling
  • Understand the impact of existing access technologies-such as dial-up modems, ISDN, ADSL, and Cable Modems-on QoS
  • Recognize the role of WAN technologiessuch as ATM, IP over ATM, Packet over SONET/SDH, and WDM-in providing QoS
  • Examine the impact of current signaling protocols upon QoS-sensitive applications such as voice and video

L'auteur - Grenville Armitage
