Résumé

It seems like half of the world's population is made up of "Web designers" these days. Maybe it's like being a "lifestyle consultant"-everyone has heard of them but no one knows what they actually do. And Web sites are a bit like that. From the outside they're supposed to present an attractive but interactive, glossy but informative, distinctive but familiar, and intuitive but imaginative interface for visitors. On the inside, however, the "real" developer reigns supreme, handling stored procedures, data access, client-side script code, browser detection, logical processing, and all the stuff that's required to power the interface users take for granted.

I'm certainly no graphical designer, and I was away the day they were handing out artistic flair, so it's the internals of making a Web site work that really interest me. And, of course, that's exactly what this book is about. I've been building different kinds of Web sites for quite a few years now, learning new tricks and techniques, finding different ways to achieve common tasks, and coping with constant changes in users' requirements and browser versions along the way.

This book is a collection of my experiences so far, updated and applied to ASP.NET version 1.1.1 consider ASP.NET to be the biggest advance in recent years in Web development technologies, and I'm constantly striving to expand the limits and find new ways to achieve what I want from it. I hope this book helps you to stretch the limits in your Web sites and Web applications as well.

Kind regards, Alex Homer
