Generating images on the fly

Allan Kent, Mitja Slenc, Jason E. Sweat

290 pages, parution le 01/07/2003

Résumé

It's easy to see why PHP is such a popular language among web developers: this open source scripting language is easy to learn, yet surprisingly powerful and extensible. For example, with the help of extension libraries such as GD you can use PHP to dynamically create and manipulate complex graphics. Generating and manipulating graphics "on the fly" is an essential skill for creating graphically rich interactive web sites that stand out from the crowd.

In this book, we show you how to write PHP scripts that can generate professional-looking graphics dynamically. We'll show you a range of useful techniques, including the best ways to create and manipulate thumbnails, cropping, merging, and blurring images, modifying image color, adding text neatly onto an image, and creating charts dynamically. Using these techniques you'll be able to enhance the appearance and functionality of your web site dramatically.

What you will learn from this book:
We will demonstrate a wide range of techniques, including:

  • Creating new image files in various formats and drawing on blank images
  • Merging, blurring, cropping, copying, and cutting-up images
  • The most effective ways to generate thumbnails and store images
  • Manipulating color, grayscaling, and duotone, adjusting brightness and contrast
  • Adding transparency, soft and hard shadows, and watermarks
  • How to add text to images: handling fonts and text layout
  • How to create professional-looking charts and graphs

This book assumes that you are already familiar with PHP: that you have already written and run PHP code, and that you are familiar with your chosen development tool.
