This text provides an introduction to data warehousing, including a description of what it is, the business rationales that will secure essential management buy-in, and how to build an effective data warehousing management team. It gives step-by-step guidance on setting up a data warehouse with Oracle, and provides tips, tricks and techniques on how to make it an effective business tool. Included are discussion of tecnical decisions needed to be made such as choosing RAID technology; running the cost-based optimizer; using read-only tablespaces; warehouse refresh mechanisms; and backup and recovery considerations. It also shows how to convert a legacy system into an Oracle data warehouse and get information on version 7.3's new data warehousing features.

is a successful author, and has co-written five works in the Oracle Press series. Michael's thirst for knowledge about Oracle the company and the software has been fueled by 11 years of exposure. He is a frequent presenter at conferences throughout the user community, and has become a point of contact for users around the world. His forte is performance tuning, disaster recovery, and instance management. His passion for Pink Floyd and Boston almost, but not quite, exceeds that for Oracle, with which he is comfortably numb.
