This book contains widely tested computer-ready algorithms in ANSI-C for a large range of standard and nonstandard methods of numerical analysis. It describes the principles of the various methods and offers practical advice on how to select an appropriate method for a given task. The book contains 18 chapters on foundations of computing; nonlinear equations in one and several variables; finding roots of algebraic equations; solving linear systems of equations directly and iteratively; matrix eigenvalues; linear and nonlinear approximation; interpolation; spline approximation and spline fitting in two and three dimensions, including special splines such as Bézier, B-, Akima and Renner splines; numerical differentiation and integration; numerical cubature; initial value problems for ODEs, as well as boundary value problems for ODEs. Many of the algorithms are adaptive.

All of the algorithms have been widely tested and implemented during the genesis of this book, which is derived from the 7th edition of the equivalent book in German.

Topics given special emphasis include: surely converging methods for solving nonlinear equations; methods for solving systems of linear equations for many special matrix structures as they appear for various spline problems and for solving ODEs e.g.; the Shepard method for multidimensional interpolation; newly developed versions for special spline function evaluations; quadrature methods of all known stable orders; ODE solvers for stiff DEs etc.

The CD contains programs in ANSI-C for almost all of the algorithms given in the book and several variants of the algorithms, as well as a C compiler and a large set of test examples for each algorithm.
