Résumé

Networking and Information Systems Journal (NIS) is a fascinating new journal which covers all areas of database and network technology. Research fields using databases, networks and their interconnections are being considered as an emerging technology. Amidst the accelerating changes, applications are moving more and more towards the Web and electronic commerce, multimedia, data warehousing and information systems. As a large number of problems have been created, solutions have to be found. NIS offers a valuable way of promoting the understanding of how these various systems work and the different approaches used to find these solutions. The evolution of telecommunication network technology imposes new types of architecture which focuses mainly on broadband approaches using new switching techniques based on rapidly progressing areas such as label or topology. Middleware is quickly becoming a central part of the development and setting of distributed environments, bringing together the universality of databases and the arrival of new high-speed switching technology. Exciting fields such as CORBA, Java, intelligent agents, etc., are being introduced. Challenges arising from these applications are:
- Multimedia and semi-structured data representation, which includes images, sound, electronic documents, and temporal aspects of these areas,
- The handling of heterogeneous information through the Web via Internet or Intranets,
- High quality service regarding data security and confidentiality, relative to the handling of information.
The integration of database technology within the networking services constitutes an explored direction to achieving the objectives of these challenges. NIS provides a communication forum for exchange between academic and industrial communities by publishing a broad range of scientific and application papers on closely-related topics in networking and information systems.
