Multimedia management

For years, all the industry have predicted and anticipated the arrival of multimedia services via the network. From all indications, this new age is upon us now especially with the emergence of the Internet and the huge potential of ecommerce. The study of multimedia transmission over various network technologies has been the research subject of a considerable amount of research teams all over the world industry and research laboratories. Much of that work has focused on the QoS (Quality of Service) management in B-ISDN (Broadband integrated services digital) networks such as ATM, and recently IP-based networks. While at the begirming, these two technologies were considered as antagonist, the actual enhancement of operators core networks show, in contrary, an integrated approach at the core network (with MPLS) and the access network (with ADSL). These integration of various technologies using sophisticated load balancing and routing techniques will permit to deploy new intelligent approaches to control the traffic and the congestion at the différent levels of the network to provide the end user with QoS custornised multimedia communications.
The importance of the subject has motivated the organisation of a special miniconférence conférence called Multimedia Management, within the framework of the Networking'2000 main conférence, held in Paris, France, on May 19, 2000. This mini-conférence has made possible the presentation of a number of interesting research works and has risen a number of interesting discussions regarding the différent approaches to manage multimedia networks and services.
