MFC Programming with Visual C++ 6

Oh no! Not yet another MFC book! Or is it?
If you're like me, you own nearly every volume ever written regarding Windows programming (and, in fact, own multiple editions of the same work!). While there is certainly a lot of fresh, new information out there, much of what you see is also repeated throughout many threads--it's all information you've seen before. When MacMillan approached us to design this particular book, they asked for a fresh approach. True, they wanted to cover the basics, but they also wanted practical and useful examples that exceeded the basics to help the intermediate to advanced MFC programmer solve their real-world puzzles. We tried to pack as much practical experience into the book as we could! It isn't enough to simply explain how some technology works--you need to also outline the side-effects of using the technology and show how it might be applied in true applications versus over-simplified, stripped-down samples. That was our direction, and certainly my true hope is you find the information found in this book to be valuable as well as interesting to read and learn.
If you've never written a book, I can't recommend the experience highly enough. It really tests your mettle! I would like to second Dave's comments and voice a hearty "Thank You!" to all who participated in the making of this book. I know for myself it was a labor of love--I love writing code, and writing about writing code is even better! (Well, almost...) I believe this to be true for all of us who put this together for you.
Unlike Paul DiLascia (who writes for "Microsoft System's Journal"), I can honestly say "If it works, we wrote it...if it doesn't work, we *still* wrote it! (And take responsiblility for it...)" We use this code and these techniques every day, and we hope you'll find they work for you, too.

The "first-stop" book for the intermediate MFC
developer
While this topic has been well-covered, Kenn and I
approached it from a practicality standpoint. Internal
books go too deep too fast. Beginning books don't go far
enough very quickly. Our book, conceived after several
discussions, centers on the most-used and efficient
methodologies of applying MFC to "every day" problem
solving. Many wonderful authors assisted us in this
colossal effort, and our deepest appreciation go out to
those souls and their many late nights on this project.
From the Document/View architecture to DirectX programming,
this book covers it. Obviously, covering every possible
topic down to an in-depth level would require many volumes,
but we set our sights on creating the best desk reference
available today. I think you will find that we did just
that.
By the way, I've written only this book, and assisted Lyn Robison on "Teach Yourself Database Programming with Visual C++ in 21 days". I have to live with a very common name !
